First Impressions: Stepping Into a Regal Retreat

Arriving at Ananda in the Himalayas, the transition from the bustling chaotic roads to the tranquil estate is like crossing into a different world. Spanning 100 acres, this former Maharaja’s palace beautifully marries the beautiful natural surroundings with an aura of serene grandeur. The palace, with its majestic facade set against the Himalayan backdrop, provides a unique old-world charm that instantly grounds you. Right from the start, it's clear Ananda is a sanctuary where history, culture, and wellness intertwine, offering a truly distinctive experience.

Personal Wellness: A Customised Path to Rejuvenation Under the expert care of Senior Ayurvedic Physician Dr. Sankar and the wellness team, my 5 night Destress Program was a meticulously curated journey to address my personal wellness needs holistically. Ananda's approach, deeply rooted in Ayurvedic tradition, isn’t about a quick fix but instead seeks to harmonise mind, body, and spirit.

My days were thoughtfully planned, blending Ayurvedic treatments such as Abhyanga and Shirodhara, to reduce stress and tension with TCM sessions such as Reflexology and Acupuncture to treat my physical and mental wellbeing, and an eye-opening emotional healing session offering a chance for some real self-reflection. Despite the full schedule, each activity felt like a step towards a more balanced and peaceful self.

Daily Rhythm of Activities

Outside of your program Ananda keeps you busy with lots of other wellness activities. Mornings begin with mantra chanting, setting a peaceful tone for the day. Then, it’s off to Hatha yoga classes, accessible for beginners and seasoned yogis alike. If you’re more into sweating it out, there’s a gym session followed by enlightening talks on Vedanta, tackling both life’s practicalities and its deeper questions. The day wraps with meditation and another Vedanta session, however there’s plenty in between, from 3 hour treks and healthy cooking classes to leisurely nature walks and golfing on Ananda’s own scenic six-hole course.

Accommodation and Dining: A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Wellness

While you will be welcomed in the Palace, the spa, restaurant and main facilities including a temperature controlled outdoor pool and well-equipped gym are a short walk downhill. Ananda’s main guest rooms are all newly renovated and housed in a modern white building nestled neatly in the surrounding landscape with different outlooks. The Palace and Garden View rooms are lovely, but the Valley View rooms are the best in my opinion, these rooms are located on the top floors, with panoramic views of the Rishikesh valley. There are also three spacious villas, which all have their own private pools. All rooms have modern amenities including an extensive pillow menu, bath menu and large comfortable beds, all feature lots of wood and muted colours. For something extra special and unique there is also the Viceregal Suite, the only guest housing in the Maharaja’s Palace.

At Ananda, the restaurant's approach to meals mirrors their overall philosophy – aiming for meals that are both light and nourishing. Whether you're here just to unwind or deeply dive into a wellness journey, the menu has you covered. You've got choices ranging from Indian and Pan-Asian to Western dishes. But if you're following one of the wellness programs, there's a special menu crafted just for you, sticking close to Ayurvedic principles. And don't worry about being too rigid – the chefs are more than happy to tweak your meals to suit your taste buds perfectly, ensuring you love every bite.

The dining space itself is a peaceful spot, often with soothing classical instrumental tunes setting the mood. And if the weather's playing nice, you can opt to eat on the expansive balcony.

The Ananda Team: Service Beyond Expectations

The team at Ananda are like your personal wellness companions, ensuring you have an excellent experience. Take, for example, the nights I found a hot water bottle tucked into my bed – a comforting, cosy surprise that was much appreciated in the cool Himalayan evenings. Or the time my driver, transformed into my guide, leading me through the bustling streets of Rishikesh. Together, we navigated busy markets and a crowded pedestrian bridge with a nonchalant cow in the middle, all the way to the soul-stirring Ganga Aarti ceremony. It's these moments, thoughtfully facilitated by the Ananda team, that elevate your stay from good to great.
