Anantara Veli Maldives Resort Review

Experience a blend of romance and wellness at Anantara Veli Maldives Resort with The Wellness Travel Expert founder, Samantha Lippiatt.

The Maldives has long been synonymous with romance—azure waters, white sand beaches, and a luxurious ambiance ideal for honeymoons and celebrations. Yet, as more travellers seek health-conscious getaways, the Maldives has responded with an increasing number of wellness offerings. Resorts like Anantara Veli Maldives Resort make it easy to add wellness elements to your luxury stay, or even split your time between indulgence and mindful rejuvenation, creating an experience that is as healthy as it is decadent.

Anantara Veli Maldives Resort is a tranquil island sanctuary, perfect for those seeking both luxury and well-being. Set on its own private island, the resort effortlessly combines the pristine beauty of the Maldives with the elegance and comfort of a five-star retreat. I recently spent three nights here with my husband, celebrating our ten-year wedding anniversary while exploring their Balance wellness offerings. This tropical haven provided everything we could have wished for: romance, luxury, and a dedicated focus on rejuvenation.

Accommodation & Cuisine

At Anantara Veli, guests can choose from an impressive selection of over-water, ocean, and beach villas, with even the entry-level accommodations being over-water villas—a rare luxury. Staying in one of these over-water villas is an bucket-list experience, waking up surrounded by the endless turquoise waters. All of the villas at Anantara Veli Maldives Resort have been recently renovated and combine the latest in high-tech comforts with a seamless blend of traditional Maldivian influences and contemporary luxury, ensuring a very comfortable stay.

During my visit, I chose a Superior Over Water Villa, as this villa offers more privacy and floor-to-ceiling windows in both the bedroom and the bathroom, where you can soak up the views. The gentle sway of the ocean lulled me to sleep each night, while the private deck quickly became my favourite spot to start the day, looking for colourful fish, rays, and even small black tip reef sharks passing by. And you can even snorkel right off your own deck with complimentary equipment provided.

The resort’s dining options are also impressive, with access to the restaurants at both Anantara Veli and Anantara Dhigu, guests are spoilt for choice with seven dining venues, from light snacks at the Dhoni Bar to indulgent culinary experiences, cooking classes at Spice Spoons, in-villa or designer dining - there is no shortage of options here.

Three of the resort’s restaurants are located within Anantara Veli. Cumin offers an extensive à la carte breakfast, featuring a variety of option, including healthy choices like Açaí bowls and wellness bircher muesli. In the evening, Cumin transforms into a vibrant dining venue serving authentic Indian Ocean cuisine, with Maldivian curries, spicy Sri Lankan seafood, and vegetarian specialties from India. Guests are also welcome to visit Fushi Cafe on Anantara Dhigu for a buffet breakfast, which includes a dedicated wellness section.

For à la carte dining, Origami is the resort's Japanese restaurant, specialising in sushi and teppanyaki, the dishes can be enjoyed either on the deck overlooking the ocean or in the chic interior. Meanwhile, Baan Huraa, the signature Thai restaurant, serves authentic flavours in a stunning over-water setting.

Guests looking for Italian cuisine can take a short boat ride to Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort and dine at Aqua, or visit Sea.Fire.Salt for mouth-watering steaks and seafood, and opt for their signature stone grill—one of the healthiest cooking methods using natural volcanic stone.

Whether dining under the stars or enjoying a meal at one of the beautiful restaurants, the emphasis on fresh, locally sourced ingredients ensures that each bite is both wholesome and delicious. This allows you to indulge in the flavours of the Maldives while still prioritising health and wellness, if you choose—though there is certainly plenty to tempt you.

Wellness Experience

Under the banner of Balance Wellness by Anantara, Anantara Veli Maldives Resort offers comprehensive tailored wellness programs that cater to individual goals. These personalised journeys range from 3 to 7 days and are tailored to individual goals such as enhancing sleep, detoxification, and weight management. Guests benefit from the expertise of an on-site team, including a nutritionist, holistic therapists, wellness coaches, as well as yoga and boxing instructors, ensuring a comprehensive and supportive wellness experience.

During my short stay, I was given an initial consult and introduction to the offerings available. I then experienced a series of three treatments, one each day, designed to help restore balance and enhance well-being:

  • Day 1: Began with an anti-jet lag foot massage paired with oxygen therapy—an invigorating treatment that released travel tension, restored my energy, and left me feeling fully rejuvenated after the journey.

  • Day 2: I enjoyed an Ayurvedic Abhyanga massage, using warm oils to promote circulation and detoxification. The expertise of the therapist ensured that I left with a deep sense of calm and contentment.

  • Day 3: After a traditional pulse diagnosis, I received a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment, focused on harmonising my body’s energy. The combination of techniques including acupuncture and cupping addressed my concerns and supported my overall well-being.

Anantara Veli Maldives Resort offers an extensive range of wellness facilities:

    • Four Treatment Suites specialising in various therapies, including Ayurveda

    • A traditional Hammam for a luxurious and purifying experience

    • Aesthetic Facials and a Medi Spa for advanced skincare and rejuvenation

    • A Beauty Salon for grooming and relaxation treatments

    • Steam Room and Sauna to detoxify and unwind

    • Outdoor Showers to refresh after treatments

    • Relaxation Garden featuring hot and cold plunge pools, ideal for enhancing circulation and relaxation

    • Well equipped Fitness Centre featuring cardio machines and free weights

For added fitness options, guests can take a two-minute ferry transfer to the nearby Anantara Dhigu Maldives Resort, which offers additional facilities, including another fitness center and a boxing ring. Anantara Veli also provides a schedule of daily activities shared between both islands. To keep up with the latest classes and offerings, guests are encouraged to connect with the wellness team via WhatsApp upon arrival.

Guests can also enjoy yoga, guided meditation, fitness classes, and other wellness activities in the ocean facing yoga pavilion, as well as a plethora of water sports.

Highlights & recommendations

No visit to the Maldives is complete without exploring its crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life. Make sure to take advantage of the on-site dive shop, as I did, for an unforgettable scuba diving adventure that reveals the breathtaking underwater beauty of the Maldives. Prefer snorkeling? Join a snorkel safari or experience the thrill of swimming with nurse sharks.

You can also enjoy kayaking, along with many other water activities like kitesurfing (when conditions allow) and surfing, either directly at the resort or accessible by boat.
